Characteristics of Guidance

Guidance aims at developing in the individual the capacity for self-direction. It helps him to become independent in self-reliant for solving his own problems and carrying his own burdens. It is a process by which individuals develop maturity and desired level of integration that helps them to make adequate adjustments in different situations of life. An analysis of the above viewpoints shows that guidance has the following main characteristics

  1. It is a process of helping or assisting an individual to solve their problems.
  2. It helps them to identify where to go, what to do and how to do for post accomplishment of their goals.
  3. It is a continuous process which starts right from childhood, adolescence and continues over in old age.
  4. It is assistance to the individual in the process of development rather than direction of that development.
  5. It is a service meant for all: its regular service which is required for every student, not only for abnormal students.
  6. Guidance is an organized service not an incidental activity of the school.
  7. It is both an art and science.
  8. Guidance is centered on the needs and aspiration of students.
  9. It is both generalized and specialized service
