Definitions of Guidance


Guidance is the assistance given to an individual in trouble to understand his problems and deal with them intelligently. It is the help given by one person to another in making choices and adjustments and in solving problems. The given assistance will make the individual self-directing and capable of taking his own decisions.

According to Skinner, guidance is a process of helping young person learn to adjust to self, to others, and to circumstances. In the words of Jones, guidance is the personal help that is given by one person to another in developing life goals, in making adjustment and in solving problems that confront him in the attainment of goals.
According to Hamrin & Erikson, Guidance is an assistance made available by a competent counselor to an individual of any age to help him direct his own life, develop his own point of view, make his own decision & carry his own burden.
As defined by UNESCO, guidance is a process, developmental in nature by which an individual is assisted to understand, accept and use his abilities, aptitudes and interests and attitudinal patterns in relation to his aspirations.

Shortly, guidance is the process of helping an individual to help himself and to develop his potentialities to the fullest by utilizing the maximum opportunities by the environment. It aims at developing in the individual the capacity for self-direction. It helps him to become independent in self-reliant for solving his own problems and carrying his own burdens. It is a process by which individuals develop maturity and desired level of integration that helps them to make adequate adjustments in different situations of life.
