Principles of Guidance




      Guidance is the process of helping an individual to help himself and to develop his potentialities to the fullest by utilizing the maximum opportunities by the environment. It aims at developing in the individual the capacity for self-direction. It helps him to become independent in self-reliant for solving his own problems and carrying his own burdens.


The important principles of guidance are the following:

  1. The dignity of the individual is supreme.
  2. Each individual is different from every other individual.
  3. The primary concern of guidance is the individual, in his social setting.
  4. The attitude & personal perceptions of the individual are the basis on which he acts. The individual generally acts to enhance his perceived self.
  5. The individual has the innate ability to learn.
  6. The individual needs a continuous guidance process from early childhood through adulthood.
  7. Each individual may need .the' information & personalized assistance given by competent professional personnel at some time.
  8. It must be an integral part of school system.
  9. Periodic evaluation should be made a part of the programme.
  10. An organised guidance programme should be flexible according to the needs of the individual and community.
  11. Guidance service is for everyone.
  12. It is directed towards the development of an individual’s self-realisation, self-reliance and self-development.
